amazing similar style like a peerless

Hi

found a one-off gomm bodied jowett jupiter in the internet. was really suprised how similar the bodystyle to the peerless is - never saw it befor! would be really interesting which styling is older - anybody who is knowing? or is it possible, that there is a conection between the one-off and the peerless style?
sorry to talk here about other cars like peerless and warwick, but have a look to your own... (- it is not the same style, of course not, but the fins, the rear window, the.....)

This is one of two Jupiter chassis known to have been bodied by Maurice Gomm, out of the 75 or so Jupiters sold in chassis form. Aluminium body stretched over a thin tubular alloy frame, sort of a Byfleet Superleggera !.

I've heard several versions of the history of the Gomm coupes over the years, almost certainly the two chassis were bodied a couple of years apart, 1951 and 53 perhaps, and probably subsequently slightly updated in detail. There may have been one, or two, others.

Yes, almost certainly the inspiration for the Peerless, or at least the only candidate I've ever come across. This car I nearly bought in the mid 70s, somewhat rundown, at the time I had a Swallow Doretti and a good pal owned a Jupiter - I next saw it in the early 80s, restored and looking similar to the photographs in your link.

Bernie Rodger and Maurice Gomm belonged to the same motorsport circles in the 1950s, both unafraid to innovate and to take on board the innovations of others.

Cheers,

Alec

Yes I too have seen this car "in the flesh" as it was pointed out to me at a show as being a Peerless.disbelief

It is (in my opinion) very loosely along the same lines as a Peerless...fins, grill, four wheels...confuse but as the great Eric Morecambe said " I'm playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order biggrin

and you hang in there Till, your still keen I see, we'll get you in one soon!

Strikes me as being much more like a Gilbern GT rather than a Peerless.

Well, of course the gomm bodyed jupiter has not the same style - perhaps "amazing" was not the right item...
inspiration was the word what i was looking for (thanks Alec)...
And of course there are other cars with simillar styling elements - DB4, AC Aceca, yes even the Gilbern GT.
And yes Nigel - the difference beetween the jupiter or a Gilbern GT and an Peerless is, that all these cars have an unusuall interessting style (a Gilbern GT is not ugly, thats unfair - by the way, i talk about design, not about the MG vs. Triumph stuff), BUT a Peerless is not only interessting - she is a BEAUTY!!! (yes Nigel, i am keen...)
i was just thinking about if the jupiter was an inspiration for the Peerless design...
i got some information about the one-off car and it seems that the design is not sooo old, but i also read an articel in the internet (in german language - strange!) that says that this bodydesign is not unique - i don`t know what is true.
Here what i got from the hvauction:

Maurice Gomm was associated with several London Sports car bodybuilders, notably Lola Cars.He produced super designs, which were carried out, as with this Jupiter in Aluminium over an ash frame. The car was bodied on a 1950 chassis, purchased privately when Jowetts ceased trading in 1957,and was completed in 1960.

so, i will post here in future
thanks for intrest
sorry, for my poor english

cheers
Till
