I recently had a conversation with a specialist who is confident of being able to make new rear screens as per original for us. Cost per unit is yet to be established but the tooling costs are circa £1600 to us. This is a one-off fee. Obviously the more owners sign up for a screen, the less expensive they become for everyone.
So... Any takers? Who'd like a brand new rear screen? Or a spare?
Is that a stampeding herd of PW owners worldwide I hear approaching?
Gary: I guess I'm on the "interested" list. Will these be laminated or just toughened glass?
Under "normal" circumstances (i.e. not racing at Le Mans) it would be a bit difficult to break the rear screen without doing some serious damage to the rest of the car, so it's a pretty expensive spare to buy and keep "in case". Maintaining a source of front screens available at a reasonable price is probably more important because these are much more prone to damage in use. (for those that use the cars that is...)
Are there really lots of potential restorations needing a rear screen? Is this a good case for the TR Spares Fund or are we out of credit now?
Thanks for looking into this Gary. I did have a guy get in touch last year about rear screens but he was based in southern France and I didnt like the idea of sending a screen all the way down there etc. realistically if these came in at about £200-250 each including the buck (which we owned)I think they would sell. I will talk with the usual suspects in the register and see if they are willing to help, they have been very helpfull in the past and as a club we hold no funds to support a project like this.
