Any of the major TR suppliers can sell you a new filler cap, at around thirty quid. However the chrome generally leaves a lot to be desired, and they are an absolute pain to change, because the cast ali collar that it screws into is usually pretty corroded. And the filler cap has to be "vented", otherwise the pump couldn't suck the fuel out. So any "sealing" here is sort of cosmetic, unless the car is upside down. However, fuel will leak out...
- If the tank is brim-full, and you are pumping from the other side, because there is always some seepage back through the delivery valve on the unused pump.
- On acceleration, if your tank is pretty full and isn't baffled internally, the fuel can't keep up with your enthisiasm, and makes a rush for the exit.
Hi thanks for he info. I seem to have fuel evapration problem. My car has had the original tanks removed and a single tank placed in the boot. and is filled from the o/s filler only. I think I am getting evporation from a pour seal on cap. I have looked for other leaks not found any as yet. Is cap from a certain Thanks Duncan
I'd still suspect a small leak somewhere, rather than evaporation out of the cap. Try popping some clingfilm under the cap for a day or two, that should confirm whether it is. Don't try driving with the clingfilm on, or the pump will stop! Small leaks can be a devil to find, especially in warm weather when the fuel evaporates as fast as it seeps out.
