I am looking for a period style tire for my new 5" 60 spoke wheels. The Avon 185/70 has all the looks and costs all the money, but the concern is the tread width. The specs say 6.4" which is 1.9"" wider than the 165s. Diameters are close 25.35 vs 25.4. I know tire manufacturers are not consistent with their measuring tools. Thoughts on the width?
Dean,
Have you looked at what Vredestein has to offer? I use their 165s on my TR4 but they have some wider that may work. I love the tire compound they use. Good ride and handling! Tire rack.

Hi Dean
Those Avon's look the business!
I dont have any experience of them but i can recommend Pirelli Cinturato 185/70 VR15. I run the same size wheel (centre laced) and I consider that they have added to the driving experience, they track well, the steering is nice and precise (for a Peerless!) and give plenty of grip when pushed. They fill the arches well I think look good. my car is a Ph2 with a few modifications in the front arches but they don't foul the bodywork but all cars seem different. Hope that helps.
Indeed the Cinturatos look great. I asked for some more information about the Avons from Longstine and they talked me out of them. Sticky but will pick up rocks like a track tire. They tend to flat stop if not drive frequently and get noisy with wear. I am inquiring about Blockleys cross plys. Period look, street compound and an attractive price. If these are a no-go, then radials will be the solution. I was just hoping for a different driving experience:). I have vredesteins on the Healey 3000 and the Warwick with no complaints.
