Alternators

Irritating alternator failure this week, duff diode pack draining the battery.

Shame, it's a really neat little unit, leaves loads of space for the exhaust tubes.

However, this leads to an interesting discovery.

On the left, Nippondenso unit, Cambridge Motorsport 40A £££, on the right, Car Builder Solutions, same 40A, made in China for Bosch £98.

But of a no-brainer that one.

Well spotted, Frank.
I use CBS a lot. Excellent service.

funny I was only thinking about this yesterday!

I have (I think) no4 alternator fitted to mine, its the smallest "standard type" alternator I could find and has lasted well(that's torn it!)†

its very short in the length but about standard in dia. I'll get a pic of it...but not in situ as I've blown the whole engine bay/trans apart†doh

does this one fit the "usual brackets" you can get of Alternator up grade?

It's a 2 bolt fix, so upper fix on the standard sliding tensioner bracket, lower 9/16 bolt fix to the standard engine plate with a spacer.

3 connections, 10mms bolt to battery, field activation from ign and warning light terminals on a T format plug.† No ammeter.

Basically it's tiny, about the size of a pint mug, loads of air space to exhaust, and 40A is plenty, better than a 22A dynamo.

As it's a nippondenso copy, spare diode packs and voltage regulators on ebay.

Most of the times the voltage regulators give up due to heat.
The alternator is still ok then.

Almost common practice on the Lotus Elise to.
A good fix for the Elise is to take the voltage regulator off the alternator and mount it remote at a cooler place.

Off course with appropriate wiring.

I'll have a look at remote mounting the regulator Eric.† I just need to find a cool place!

If you have killed the voltage regulator, either with heat, (or by dropping a spanner when you took the exhaust off......)

Replacement regulators are £22.75, free delivery on ebay.† You need a Nippondenso D2 126000-1160.

The Chinese alternator seems to be a direct copy of the nippondenso unit so spares should be interchangeable.

Careful though, there are a lot of similar looking but not identical alternators on lawnmowers, forklifts and tractors.
