After a couple of years away from this forum, we are back!! We are the lucky owners of #96 and have been on this forum before, but lost our sign in info, hence the different looking sign in.
At any rate, we are about to get started on #96!! But first a bit of background... Somewhere in its life, #96 had a sun roof put in. They did are respectable job, but we want to go back to the original. We have a plan of finding someone, relatively close to Montana, who would be willing to allow us to make a form from their Peerless roof. Our plan would be to cover said roof with plastic, use Styrofoam blocks to create a damn surrounding the area to be formed. Then fill that area with the canned foam one can get from the hardware store that does NOT create heat. Now to find some kind person that will allow this craziness. Or, does anyone have a good idea?? I am planning a trip to Los Angeles in the near future. I am pretty certain that there is a fellow with a Peerless in the direction...
Well ..im lucky enough to have a unpainted car next door with a nice roof.......which made it a lot easier.....
I layed a few strip of cling film on the the roof to act as a barrier
Then got a n old bed sheet and layed that over the top
Marked on the sheet the area I needed to fill the space on the other car but went a couple of inches wider all round..
Cut 3 fibreglass cloth sheets that size...
Mixed me resign.....layed the first sheet on and just worked the resign in...
It took a bit for resign that I thought because the bed sheet soaked some of that up....then repeated it twice more..
Use plenty of resign then the weight helps it take form
Let it set ...had a beer ...had another beer.... had a few beers ....i find it helps when working on cars
When it set I layed it on the other car and from inside marked out the size I needed and cut.....
Used 3 of the old webasco supports so I could lay the new roof section on the car with out it falling through...then use a few pair of wood strips ..only small bits .....and with one inside underneath if he like an one on top with a screw just nip the old roof and the new section so to pull the two edges leval
Had a beer....... then feathered the edges and fibre glassed it in place......
yea, IMHO that roof line really doesn't need any distractions...
I have owned ( and fitted one) two Webasto/Britax sunroofs in previous cars and I love them, in the UK there is nothing better (due to our weather) and I have enough parts to fit one to BP but could never bring myself to do it...just love that uninterrupted flow of the Peerless roof line
that is fantastic!! Unfortunately we are out in Montana and no where near another Peerless. I am headed toward California this spring so hope to connect with someone near Anaheim. Meanwhile we are working on two 1968 Spitfires getting ready for SCCA soloing. Someday we hope to run the Peerless too.
Kent, my phase two is in a shop not far from Anaheim. You are welcome to check it out. The body and paint are done. The rest should be done by Tuesday- it's just not clear whether that will be a Tuesday in this year.....
Sorry for lack of response. I forget I need to get out of the shop!! Hmmmm. I used to fly thru Amsterdam on my way to Tanzania but I suspect airport security would frown on a roof section. Thanks tho!
You mean there are more of us with too many projects? My son and I are both working madly on 1968 Spitfires getting ready for SCCA soloing season. Then there is the 65 TR4, the 70 GT6, etc. when I can travel Ill be in touch.
This is a long shot, but my wife and I have traveled through Heathrow a couple of times on our way to our mission in Tanzania. We have retired now but look forward to visiting our friends in Africa someday. (maybe after all of the project cars????) At any rate, if we head that way again, I'll let you know!
