I have recently got my cousin's Peerless back on the road after a short lay off since 1978! One problem I still have is a very sluggish starter motor, despite taking it off and cleaning it. Bendix is also temperamental. Nigel suggested it might be time for a replacement but cautioned I need to be careful as different ones have a different number of teeth by a count of one. Mine is the bomb type with a cowl that covers half the end. Are there any suggestions about what replacement I should get and where to go for one? thanks in advance for any thoughts.
Edward, simplest thing to do is count the teeth on your flywheel (as this is the bit with the different number of teeth) and get the appropriate motor.
Go hi-torque starter. I put one in both the Peerless and the Morgan and it's a world of difference. Way cheaper and lighter than an old-school replacement.
I'm hoping I haven't confused the matter with the ring gear comment.
I would assume that Edward has the correct ring gear for the bomb starter as it came with the car and if he replaces it then he just needs to make sure its replaced with the equivalent hi Torque or reconditioned motor.
Counting the teeth on the ring gear is not the easiest of hobbies....
