Clutch slave cylinder mounting

Back in my 'one step forward' thread, I mentioned my problem getting the clutch to operate properly. Having stripped everything down today and ensured the pushrod was fully home in the cylinder, I was still getting way too much play between the piston in the slave being fully retracted and the point where the pushrod starts to act on the clutch release arm. Almost as if the pushrod was way too short.

In an act of desperation/frustration, I took the slave cylinder off from the engine side of the mounting plate and re-attached it to the gearbox side. Now I know that the manual and every drawing I've seen shows that this is incorrect but I HAVE seen pics of the slave mounted to the gearbox side on some TR3's. Whether this is a mistake or not, the result was that I was able to adjust the pushrod to get the correct amount of play AND, more importantly, I can run through the gears with no problem.

So, what are the thoughts of those in the know?

Yes, gearbox side of the mounting plate.  I had to go and and check though.

Thanks guys.

That will explain why it didn't work first time round.

Seems slightly counter intuitive though. Pushing away from rather than against the plate it's mounted to.

Anyways, seems to work now and a trial run around my unit is on the cards for the weekend.

think it depends on what slave cylinder your using lockhead cylinders are mounted gearbox side girling are mounted engine side I think

Mine would suggest other way round Timmy. I (and I think most Peerli) have Girling and mine is now mounted gearbox side. Although, as stated above, I have definitely seen images of slave cylinders mounted engine side but, off the top of my head, can't say if they were Girling or Lockheed.

think its all about the length of your stroke......Lockheed were used on early tr3s but they had different master cylinders BKB and NJL are mounted engine side..but carnt see it makes much difference just means your rod length is shorter ...

ha ha just read that back and it sounds a bit rude I just had a problem with my clutch so had the slave master in bits so what I mean is I moved the cylinder from the back to the front and it made no difference to my problem but the length of the rod from the centre of the hole in the little fork to the end of the rod that locates into the piston was 6 1/8 inch long so if the slave cylinder is mounted on the gearbox side of bracket it will be a bit shorter because its a bit closer to clutch lever.. my problem was the clutch plate was sticking to the engine plate and wasn't releasing properly my fault I use an old friction plate (no comments nigel please) and the car was stood for a while......47 years to be exact

me, comment, on a Yorkshire man, on used old stock...with mmmy reputation evileye

I seem to remember Jon had problems years ago and found he was using either the wrong master cylinder or slave. think it was the slave as it was a different (larger) bore size and so, per mil of fluid pumped, it did less?
