Aah, Terminator doors!

I tried to do this, and then found I couldn't get the glass in.  I made the back plate right up to the lock, and then the window frame wouldn't fit.

Both Nigel and I have deconstructed the door by removing the skin, so that we could unwind the twist and rebuild.

I think this warping is due to the early GRP sagging with age and heat cycling (left out in the sun) because the RH door was far worse.

Fortunately Warwick doors are easier, they are a box construction.

Well, the glass should have plenty of room as the pencil line shows the outside of the window frame.

And the window and regulator are inside that.

Still working on the right hand side of my car, can't believe how many things need doing.

I cut out the top of the doorframe, because it was very weak.
Inside there was a rotten steel U shaped profile.

1.JPG

I replaced that with a custom made box profile made of 1mm stainless steel, so much stronger.

2.JPG

This also gives me a nice flange to bolt some of the internal door parts to.

3.JPG

I had to replace the bracket that holds the window winder mechanism.
As you can see the original bracket had rotten away but was repaired at some time.
This repair had again rotten away so was being repaired.

But by now the second repair had also rotten awayblankstare

4.JPG

Then i made an evil looking stainless steel flange with hooks on both sides that is glassed into the bottom of the door.
This holds the bottom of the window winder bracket.

5.JPG

Finally it starts to look like something again.

6.JPG

Time to start work on the fit of the window frame when i found this nasty surprise.
A large piece of the grp flange on the A post that holds the seal had broken away.
I was lucky that that piece was still hanging in the seal so i could glass it back in with a couple of extra layers of matting.

7.JPG

Another two or three evenings gone.

8.JPG

I also had to take out the B post, as i could see the bulging of the grp from rust build up where the metal was laminated in.
When a finally had it out, i decided i would replace it with a new one, but the based on the design of the Phase 1.
These are a good bit stronger.

9.JPG

I had to correct the roof line to get the rain gutter to run aligned with the window frame and quarter light.

The edge to hold the window seal was cut a bit short in the factory so i extended it a little.

11.JPG

I found that the latches had been broken and badly worn.
Lucky i bought a set of 4 from Ebay many years ago for the Phase 1.
The grp behind these parts had many oversize holes and cracks, so also this area had to be repaired.

13.JPG

Now with most of the parts back in place the alignment is satisfying

12.JPG

14.JPG

The sill cover was also broozed and battered, with lots of cracks around the hole of the fuel level gauge.
So after sandblasting i screwed it onto some straight wooden profiles and glassed it up with a length of stainless M6 rod in to give it a little bit more strength.

I will cut a new hole after the new fuel tank is in.

So that's it for now, but after all it's coming together nicely i think.

Erik, I feel you pain. Every time I think I've gotten one step further forward something else rears its ugly head and I feel like I'm back to square one again. Over the past week or so my levels of frustration have risen dramatically and my language has deteriorated badly. Hopefully things get better next week.

I have to say your workmanship is outstanding, though.

I think the riveted bit under the window winder is not a repair Eric.

It's so that you can insert all the window winder assembly into the door with the glass in place.

The final build operation was to pop river the bits together.

That is quite possible Frank, i don't know.
What i do know is that the metal plate closest to the window winder was angled and has been beaten flat to put it there.
Doesn't look original, but then again it's a Peerless

Mike i feel your pain and frustration to, believe me.
I sort of estimated that it would take about a month to do the door and right side of the car.

But it's taken already 3 months by now, and i have put almost every spare hour i had into it.

As the window frame is now fully mounted to the door the plan is to assemble the windows for the first time since i took them out last 12th of December.

I wonder how many steps back this will cause?
Fingers crossed!

Could not postpone it any longer so yesterday evening the glass went into the door.

I placed new window channels into the window frame.

To my big surprise everything still fitted and the window is going up and down very nicely.

The rear of the door dropped by just about 1mm due to the extra weight, nothing to worry about.
The window frame deflects a bit due to the pressure of the rubber door seal, needs some adjustment.

Now i need to crack on finishing the tools for making the new waist seal profile.

Erik,

Your craftsmanship is inspiring. Is the waist seal the outside wiper? If you can figure out the tooling to make that profile I would be most interested. I haven't found anything off the shelf that matches the original bends.

I know how satisfying it is to get the windows and door locks working.

yea Dean I reckon this profile is another item for all of us on here .....and I'm sure, even with my commission is taken into account Erik could make them affordable.......

We will just have to work out how to get them out of Europe due to ridiculous shipping costs that seem to be appearing now due to Bl**dy Brexit!

I was going to say that but didn't want to get too political.

Thankfully I sent my old bumpers to Erik before I had to fill in 7 pages of paperwork, find a courier willing to take them and then take out a bank loan to pay for the service.

Sunlit uplands, eh???

Don't read too much into the horror stories about shipping in the press.

I Sent Eric some tail light lenses in January, Royal Mail.

They turned up, as expected 5 days later.

The parcel tracking is a bit disjointed during the handover, but catches up in a day or so.

Not reading the press on this subject Frank, just supplied a friend of mine with a new sign for another unit he's taken on.

This unit is now just for shipping to Europe.

December 31st

If he puts 14 items supplied by 14 different suppliers (to him) on one pallet and ships it to their sister company in Europe he sends the pallet with 14 invoices and pays for shipping one pallet.

January 1st

If he puts 14 items supplied by 14 different suppliers (to him) on one pallet and ships it to their sister company in Europe AND he sends the pallet with 14 invoices he has to pay 80 euros for each invoice processed AND 8 euros per item to processed per pallet.

Now the new business is up and running....

If he puts 14 items supplied by 14 different suppliers (to him) on one pallet and ships it to their new company, they wrap and pallet all the items and give him one invoice for the lot. He then ships this out and pays one payment of 80 euros...

Dont forget this is just a handling fee into Europe, not the cost of the pallet...which has also gone up!

I have also been told by three of my suppliers that a container from China to UK was £2000...its now £8-10,000... so all that ****e you buy on ebay has just got more expensive wink

Never mind all that additional cost stuff, Nigel.

At least we've got blue passports.

Printed in Poland.

By a Franco/Dutch company.

Apologies to Erik for hijacking his thread.
