Paint colors

My Phase 2 bodywork is nearly done.  Hopefully it will soon be time to choose the paint color. It was originally a dark green - seems darker and not as shiney as BRG.  Usually I prefer to stick with original colors, but the shade doesn't seem to do much for highlighting the lines of the Peerless.  Does anybody have the color codes for original paint options?  I did a Marcos in a silver green metallic that really complimented the body lines.  Has anybody used such a color on a Peerless?  Guessing not many people will be able to tell whether it's an original color, but it would be nice to keep it as authentic as possible.

sorry Greg I have no factory codes/references but I would perhaps look at Triumph and Austin colours of the time as they were contemporary?

As for lighter colours, I have to say these are always better IMHO for GRp cars as they show less problems in the under structure of the body moldings etc and GRP does "shift" over time. I have some ripples in mine that definitely were not there 22 years ago!

Still we can say that about a lot of things too!

Light Green or Blue metallic would be very forgiving but harder to maintain/touch up and may imply the Aston look perhaps to much....there again you can never have to much Aston look IMHObiggrin

I believe the Peerless GT was only offered in five colors. I have tried to figure out the original paint codes and that information is seemingly hard to find. My car was originally blue. The five colors are green, blue, white, red and grey.

I have pretty solid evidence after sanding through a few layers of paint on the B pillar that my Peerless Phase 1 car was ice blue metallic.  The strangest thing of all is that my Warwick, which still has "most" of it's factory paint, was also ice blue metallic.    Having discovered the original paint on the Peerless after all these year has finally yielded an answer to the "what color do we paint it" question.

Dean, I doubt that's a blue metallic. My car was originally the same blue as yours and much sanding revealed a similar blue/grey undercoat or primer.

I'm going to go for California Sage Green. I know it's an Aston colour but it's one I think suits the shape of the car and, as Nigel says, you can never get too much Aston.

The "Metallic Blue" isn't an original colour.

Its the grey primer/filler and some component of the topcoat has bled into it as the cellulose solvent evaporated.  The solvent bleeds into the GRP as well and tends to show up all the filler/repairs.  Doing all repairs with GRP rather than filler helps, as does a barrier coat.

If you are going to restore a car to original condition then skinny crossplies, BPF tripod headlamps and solvent paint in the original colour are the answer.

Mostly, none of us (to varying degrees) do that any more.  Professional paint shops wont touch cellulose, although its still available, but not for use on cars.....

If you are going to get 2-pack then use loads of plasticiser to stop it cracking, and a bit of matting agent to stop it being too shiny.

We've seen P/W in some pretty gruesome colours over the years, but, in the end, it's your car.

Red ones are faster anyway.

That might indeed be correct for the Peerless Cars, but I here is a better picture of the Warwick.  It has never been repainted - original color.

I was also given a typed spec sheet that was stapled to the original invoice that Brian Shier (original owner) said he got from Bernie Rogers when he took delivery of his car.   The spec sheet shows the car can be ordered in Red, Yellow, Blue, Green and Grey and "Any Color to choice"....  Brian choose ice blue metallic.   He said he saw it on a Healey and wanted the same color for the Warwick.  We spoke about it and he said that it looked great for the first a year but was applied too thin to last...  He said that after a few years he intended to paint the car and never got around to it.

I will look more closely at the Peerless sample and see if indeed it isn't just a coincidence that the undercoat looks the same as the Warwick paint. hmmm.

It could be that the Warwick team was a bit more flexible in color choices to sell the few cars that they eventually did move.

I knew I had this somewhere... Here is an invoice for the spares that Brian bought from B. Rogers Developments Ltd, a month after he purchased his Warwick.   For &75 he acquired a big stash which he explained that he stuffed into the Warwick for it's Queen Mary journey to Florida.   It probably explains why the headliner has a few gashes.  Well, on this list includes a 1/2 gallon of Ice Blue - from the "factory".

Are you glad that I am back at Peerless/Warwick stuff, or was my absence a blessing?  Don't tell me.

Very pleased to see you back Dean, just don't post any progress photos or we will all give up!

Factory Paint colours, don't forget that you are cross referencing Peerless Cars Ltd with Bernie Rodger Developments Ltd. Two different companies running at different times!

BRDL would be far more flexible on colour (and anything else that would sell a car)  than PCL would have been IMHO.

And may I add, Brian's brother worked at BRDL painting the cars so he would definitely have got what he wanted!wink

Thanks guys.

Here is a better photo of the Peerless B pillar laying on the ice blue Warwick.  It was a very popular American color choice in the '60s so it doesn't surprise me that it would be offered to sell off those left hand Peerless variants.  They sold a lot of ice blue metallic Healey's here...  I just don't see any other colors under the silver/grey which I know is a repaint.  Or it could be that off white yellow that I thought was a primer/fill...
