Accelerator pedal question

As I've now got the engine and box back in, my thoughts are turning to trying to work out a linkage for the twin HS6 SU carbs. However, I'm slightly confused (easily done, I know) by what I consider to be the counter intuitive manner in which the leaver on the end of the accelerator pedal shaft moves. Having fitted it in what I believe to be the correct orientation and attached the return spring, the leaver works in a pushing arc. In other words, when I put my foot on the accelerator pedal, the leaver moves towards the front of the car. Convention suggests to me that this should be a pulling motion rather than a pushing one. Am I doing something really stupid here?

Pics of working ones would be great if you have any.

Thanks in advance.

HS6 ?  That's your problem.  Pedal is set up for H6. The linkage works the other way.

Somewhere I've seen a linkage kit, where HS6 are sold as TR4 stromberg replacements, but it's around £100.

I'm running HS6, linkage is not difficult to modify, but you need to make another other lever arm.  Some pictures when it stops raining.

When it stops raining? Good job you're not in Scotland, Frank. I'd be waiting until next Spring.

Anyway, I figured I'd have to pay something around that figure for a new linkage but if I could fabricate something to suit, that would be ideal.

I'll look forward to the pics.

Thanks again, Frank.

I've got a video as well, can't add it here.  There are two extra components here, one to hold the arm, and the arm itself.  The shaft joining the carbs and the arms on the shaft are standard SU components from Burlen Services.  The difficult bit is getting enough movement for full throttle. Send me an email if you'd like the video.  HS are better carbs, they don't leak fuel on the exhaust, and you can get a wider range of needles.

I've had a rummage around MOSS website and they keep these conversion bits for stromberg replacement.

They use a plate to link the carbs and support the pivot.  Be aware that the top of the front carb is very close to the hood, and the float bowl on the rear one is even closer to the steering column.

and watch out for more "Non-standard" comments to appear.

Nice work Frank!

Bit of topic, but what alternator do you have there?

It looks so small?

is there not enough spindle protruding from the right hand end of the HS6 carbs to githt he original set up?

AND yea I was looking at smaller alternators but trying to find something that wasn't from TR suppliers just off the shelf/modern car type

Cambridge motorsport Edge 40A.  Tiny.

Bought it to fit in the v of a buick, so no lump in the bonnet, but stayed with a TR lump in the end.

Got a little geared starter at the same time, loads of room for the exhaust, and no heat shields.

Not enough spindle on the carb and you'd still be moving it backwards because the arm can't go the other side. The

Thanks Frank,

are 40 amps enough when standing in traffic with lights, blower and electric fan on?

Seems fine Eric.  The only changes from OE are the radiator fan (8A) and the relays (<1A).

I've got a meaty Sierra diesel battery in the sill to keep me not of trouble.
