Gearbox questions

Well, I did say somewhere else that I was going to start asking a lot of questions.

Here are todays for the enlightened.

Just got my box back from being inspected and much to my pleasant surprise, it appears to be in excellent order. I was dreading the prospect of coughing up for a full re-build.

There are a couple of points that I'm not sure about. The casting number on the case, 30255 1, would suggest Vanguard or Ensign according to my so far limited research rather than TR but with this being a Peerless, I'm not sure if that generally applied or not. Does anyone know if Peerless were supplied TR, Vanguard or Ensign boxes or, possibly, a combination of all 3 depending on what was available?

I'm also slightly confused as my top cover has both inhibitor switches fitted but the Peerless wiring diagram (at least the one I have) doesn't seem to show them. Can anyone else advise if they have both these switches fitted to their box and, if so, how they wire up?

Final question for today concerns the rear mount. Does one of the TR ones do the job? If so, which one?

As always, thanks in anticipation for all the help.

Mike

There are three (3) possible switches on the top cover......

3/4 gear overdrive inhibitor

2 gear overdrive inhibitor

Reverse light actuator

A couple of minutes with a meter will tell you what you have.

Classic Peerless practice is that the 3/4 and 2 switches are wired in parallel so that

Having either of them closed will allow the A type O/d relay to operate.

J type O/d is only used on 3 or 4 gear.

The later 4 synchro Tr4 box is better, the layshaft is better and sync on 1st is handy.

3 and 4 synchro boxes are interchangeable, but the J type overdrive is one inch longer

And has a different mount, so the chassis and prop needs modifying.  However a J

Type will take Tr6 power so you won't break it.

The standard gearbox mount is rubbish, updated ones are marginally better but suffer

From oil contamination.

Thanks Frank. I know that the two switches that are on my box are 2nd & 3/4th inhibitors. I should probably explained myself a little better and asked if the 2 switch or the 3/4 switch need to be connected to the overdrive switch in a particular order or is it irrelevant as they are in parallel?

It's unlikely I'll be getting a TR4 box at least in the foreseeable future. Atm, the Peerless is in one of it's bleeding me dry phases. I'm aiming for having it moving under it's own steam by Spring and the list of bits I need to get to that stage isn't a cheap one. At present I need an Alternator as the dynamo was missing (wouldn't have used it anyway), starter to replace the old bomb one, electronic dizzy, water pump & housing, carb linkage etc, etc. In addition, I'm waiting on my fabricator giving me a price for new tanks, floor pans and door hinge plates. With all that going on I really don't fancy saying to my wife 'Darling there's a TR gearbox I need for the Peerless, it's only a couple of grand! Oh, and by the way, I'll have to go and pick it up in Devon'

Any hints on a supplier of uprated gearbox mounts? Revington, perhaps?

Yes, revingtons are good. It's worth giving the gearbox mount an extra coat of paint to
Delay the oil getting to it, they never seem to last long.

I understand the frustration, with these cars, it never ends.

if changing from the "bomb" type starter make sure you get the correct starter for the ring gear you have (which should be a 90 tooth affair I think). early cars have one less tooth than later. I went with  a TR4 starter as I got an NOS from a jumble and bought the TR4 ring gear.

That did twenty years before it decided to catch fire ( I kid you not outside the take away in town) and would you believe the luck at that very moment the cut off switch decided to jam open too!

Lucky I have a battery terminal with a wing nut on it so wiped that one off smartish I can tell you.....nearly had to chuck my curry at it to put the flames out.......AND before you ask, no I didn't order a starter !
