Headlamp rims Phase 1

Hi all

since the headlamp rims are not available and seemingly noone is currently producing them, I've

found a solution to have them made!

I've found a company here in Switzerland that is able to 3D-print the rims and have them chromed.

The printing materials are corrosion resistant and easy to get chromed. The rims will be exact copies

of original rims I've borrowed from am GT and will come without screw holes so that you can get

them to fit perfectly on your car.

I'll have prices available in about two weeks time. Would you please get in touch with me if you

are interested in getting a pair as well!? (Markus Tanner, classic.car@bluewin.ch)

The more they can make, the cheaper they get smile

Hi Markus

You can put me down for a pair if they are not too expensive.

OK - we have a price on the headlamp rims now!

If we can have 10 pairs made, the pair would cost SFr. 580.00 including chroming, ready to fit.

I understand that you might find it cheaper to have yours chromed locally! We can supply them bare and that will reduce the price to SFr. 420.00 the pair or 210.00 each!

These are our cost prices, no margin! I want a pair for my car - this is why I invest all the time to have them made smile

Who wants to place an order? (classic.car@bluewin.ch, T 0041 71 988 78 88 or F 0041 71 988 78 85)

I was interested to see what costs you came to with this idea.

I too have looked into this process as I use two local companies for my work and they both came back with costs of £250-300 per rim!

The biggest fear is direct sunlight and heat expansion.

I do apologise for not getting back to some of you with costs to produce these rims "oldsckool". Spun in brass, formed by hand using a buck, polishing, plating, polishing and chromed.

The last costs I got for this, based on producing 62 rims (as this is what comes out of a sheet of solid brass) is around £170...a pair!

I will have to pay up front for all the spinning and hold these in stock. Then get batches worked and chromed as we need them. This means all my money will be tied up in the stock.

I would need firm orders for at least ten pairs before I commit. Looking at my previous list this was not achieved so it fell by the wayside. Perhaps there is more momentum now?

If it's a choice between Nigels set and Markus's ones. I'd rather have the ones made by the more traditional method. The cost saving is important too. There's a bit of a difference in price.

However, I think producing 31 pairs is a big ask. I'd certainly commit to a pair and would be happy to pay up front if it helps defray the cost.

Having said that, i wouldn't want to miss out on a pair from Markus if Nigel wasn't able to get orders for a minimum of 20 rims and the project fell flat.

Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place.

Keep in mind - I gave the price in SFr.. With todays exchange rates, this is

only GBP 386.00 and without chrome 280.00 the pair.

The materials used to print them is much more durable than brass and a perfect basis to have

polished and chromed.

Our actual price is based on ten pairs only - if we can have 30 made, there would be a massive

drop in price. But - who would buy them?

Hi Nigel

would you put the rims in the spares section of the owners register homepage if I have them

made and keep them in stock with me or would I have to put them on Ebay to try and sell them off?

Markus

Hi Markus, sorry for not getting back to you on this thread, I've busy with work.

if you want to put them for sale on the website your welcome and thank you for taking the time to ask, some don't.

I do wonder though at the amount you could sell @ £386 per pair, plastic & chrome when I've been quoted £170 per pair in brass & chrome.

I grant you I may be slower at getting these manufacture as I will have to do the running in between processes/suppliers where you will be able to press a button and collect!

I would like to see a new head count of who actually needs rims as at the last count  I couldn't get ten owners to commit but there has been significant movement on cars in the last two years so

perhaps we will get better results.

Well, I certainly need a pair.

Realistically, I'd rather pay £170 than £386 so you can guess where my vote goes. At least I get another £200.00 to spend on something else.

So, a pair for me, please. When do you want the money, honey? (that's what you get for calling me sexy!!)

the printing materials used are stainless steel based - who spoke of plastic!?

Mike:

I've meanwhile just ordered a set for my own car - if you are serious about your pair, I'll contact them

again to put two more rings on order. First of all I'll have to check about the price - for my set I told them I

don't care, just make them, I want them....

forgive my ignorance, I assumed that being 3D printed they would be ABS/PLA/PVA/Paintable resin as these are the materials that I have used professionally in projects in the past, please accept my sincere apologies.........

Hi Markus

Thanks for the prompt but I'm afraid I'll have to pass on these. I just can't justify the expense at the moment given the problem I've had with the vertical links (see my post elsewhere).

I'm still a long way from detailing the car so will wait to see what turns up in the following year(s).

Best of luck with the project, though.

Mike
