XND 780

I am interested to know if my old Peerless XND 780 which I owned in the 60s has survived. I have attached a photo of the car shortly after I bought it. I do not remember the chassis number but it had what I understand was an SAH tuned engine with, amongst other mods, a 4 branch manifold. I believe it had also been lowered, if that was possible! I had many happy miles in this car and still have very fond memories of it.

Hi Keith

Thanks so much for getting in touch with the register.
I've just spoken to Nigel as we're both here at the TR International Event and neither of us recognise the registration from memory.
It's another interesting car that started life as a Phase 1 and has subsequently had a phase 2 nose grafted on by the looks of things rather like Ron Cressey's car in the video on the front page of the website.

I'm sure Nigel will check the current register of cars when he gets a moment and see if he can cast any light on the car.

Kind regards,

Jon Nolan

Well at least it may have survived. I think I sold it in 1969 to someone in Surrey who I believed resprayed it Porsche yellow. I haven't heard of it since so I hope it is awaiting attention in someone's garage rather than having been subject to the crusher. Having looked at some of the articles on this site I think it was pretty original when I owned it. I think it was 1959 and had the original slotted grey leather seats and those wonderful ex Rover fast wind windows, although these had a tendency to derail if you operated them too quickly. It used to perform excellently and I remember one occasion when youth and bravado took over from common sense and late at night at a set of traffic lights on a dual carriageway was sitting alongside a Daimler/Jag V8 police car. I noticed that the 2 coppers were looking at me and then I noticed that the Police revs were rising and the car was being held on the footbrake ready for a fast start. I couldn't help myself and when the lights changed let go staying at least a half cars length ahead until I reached 70 in 2nd overdrive. The police car shot past and on came the blue lights. I wondered if I had overdone it. The police jumped out and wanted to see my documents which were fortunately all OK and then they said "What the hell is this ? We thought you were a Ford engine Ashley special." The next quarter of an hour were spent giving them a guided tour of a car they had never seen before and clearly could outrun their police car.

Happy days.biggrin

Keith

What a great memory!! Not to one-up but, here is my best police vs. car memory. In 1968 I was driving my 1955 Thunderbird back and forth from college to home on weekends, 125 miles one way. A stretch of the new interstate was opened by the Highway Patrol for testing their new radar guns. I was clocked at 127 mph before I let off because the car started to feel a little too light on the road. The officer wanted to know what "souped up engine" I had in the Bird and wouldn't believe it was a stock 292 cu in engine. I drove that little car about 125000 miles before it went to my father. It is back in my stable now with just 8 bolts left to remove so I can take the body off the frame. Don't worry fellas, Art and I are game planning #092.
