James Whitson Body tag

There is a James Whitson & Co. body tag shown on the site advertising #166.   I haven't seen this tag before.  Of course I don't have one.  Is this a common tag for Phase 1 cars?

http://kpgarage.com/pastinventorydetail.php?id=23

It looks to be located on the hinge plate yet I can't tell for sure.

Any insight?

Dean

I have one in the same place on #118. It's on the passenger's side on the LHD car, although mine is painted red.

Some Phase 2's may also have a Wincanton body tag, passenger side,
on the A pillar.  #278 definitely has one,.

I've never seen a Warwick one.....

Dave,

When you get a chance, can you measure the tag?  I might be able to make a faithful reproduction for the Peerless...not that I have anywhere to mount it until the body work is done!

Dave,

Thank you so much!  I am going to try to recreate a badge for my Peerless using the acid bath method.   If it is even remotely decent, I'll make a few extras as Christmas gifts or key chains.

Oh - I hooked up with Colin Ham.  He spliced together 15 minutes of personal Warwick 8mm films.   I am converting it to DVD.  Very cool stuff.  A little of the factory, racing at Brands Hatch/Snetterton.  There is a terrible scene on the way home from the track were the Tunex Triumph engined Warwick crashes.   Ron, Colin Bernie are all present pouring over the totaled wreckage.  It is clear enough that you can tell (block color and oil cap placement) that this is most likely the engine that found it's way into my Warwick.

I'll start another thread once I get the film properly converted and available.

Good stuff,

Dean

I may be able to remove the badge without damaging it if that will help.

Thanks Dave.  That won't be necessary.  I clear photo, straight on, would be best.  If not, I can probably work from the photo on the K&P site.  Don't put yourself out.  The cars are locked away in the barn until I finish bricking the gravel area in front.  I got fed up with the dust since it doesn't rain any more, so I had to do something about it. 6 pallets down, 4 to go...

Here's the Whitson badge that was supplied with my car (chassis #94) - it had already been removed when I acquired the car:

James Whitson coachwork tag.jpg

As you can see, it's slightly different to the one which chassis #166 (the ex Kastner & Partners car) sports having a different address and missing the (all seeing(?)) eye and the little motto.

So, did Whitson's move during Peerless production...and if so, at which chassis number did they change over to the later style plate?!

Or since it omits the 'phone number, was the design on chassis #166 used for LHD cars destined for export?

Chassis #166's tag may have been blasted at some point I would suspect looking at the rough finish.  There are what appear to be remnants of paint around the edges of the design.

Hope that's of interest!

Tom

Very interesting.  I am re-posting the tag for #166 just in case the original link goes away.    I do like the watchful eye.  I suspect the motto was adopted after a bout with quality/customer difficulties.  What do you all think the text is following the first Sipson - (R?)    That is an abbreviation I am not familiar with.

It's a capital R followed by a small, superscript capital D. It's the abbreviation for Road here in the UK.

Here is one I created from your pictures and specs.

IMGP0020.JPG

You can see that the font is a little off and I might have left it in the bath a little too long.  I'll hunt around for a better font match, but I wanted to see if the transfer and acid process would actually produce a reasonable copy.

I am pretty pleased.  Just need to confirm the colors before getting out the paint by numbers set.

I should probably add a supplemental body tag on my Peerless and credit Celia and Ian, they provided the left side panels:)

Excellent work.

Dean, if you decide to sell these tags I would be more than happy to purchase one as mine is also missing, GT 00063 it was probably removed during an earlier restoration,

Regards, Jeff.

Jeff and Eric,

Oh - I wouldn't think about selling them.  Just send me your mailing address of line and I'll slip one in the mail.

Dean

Dean, I really think you should consider selling them as I'd rather like one for mine and I live on the other side of the pond. I rather suspect you'll get quite a few requests.

Superb Dean,

I'd like to buy one, too. With part of the purchase price allocated to keep this site going?

Mr Cluley will be washing dishes in his local cafe to pay for its upkeep otherwisebiggrin. We don't want that have you seen how dirty his car gets!

How to pay? Paypal?

All the best,

Gary

I had a little time yesterday between meetings to knock out a few more body tags. I found a slightly more correct ampersand so the font issue will be as good as it gets in this batch. Recipients get to drill their own holes and apply paint if desired. I am going to leave mine plain semi polished brass. If you are successful in painting one please do share photos.

With a half a dozen finished and supplies to make several more that should take care of the worldwide global demand. I'll review last year's retail financial reports to determine if I need to stockpile inventory for the holiday shopping rush. - not.

Gary's idea to use the proceeds to help defray web site costs is not a bad one, (as long as this isn't a scheme for Dave C to funnel money from my restoration fund to pay for his gas and beer), so I'll yield to Gary and Nigel to set a nice low price.

Once we get that settled, I am happy to use paypal and I can slip them in the mail immediately.

All kidding aside, if you do want one or two, it is probably best that you let me know soon as I don't know how brilliant I will be at keeping the process up to date to recreate one several years from now. Right now, I have a technique, (digital artwork program, transfer paper, laminator, chemical mix, wife's crock pot, air bubbler, etc) that seems to work. A few years from now, I'll have to learn it all over again:)

I have a lot of sanding and body work to finish on that ratty Peerless #213 and you know what those fumes do...

Dean

And for your viewing pleasure... a finished lot ready to go.

Dean,

Great work. If I put some chemicals in the crock pot with some metal no telling how big the hole would be! I will take one for #155. By the time its on the road the brass will have a great patina!

Greg

Likewise, Dean. If you have a Paypal address, please let me know and I'll send you something to at least cover the cost of postage to the UK.

I am ready to mail out the first ten tags.

I have given Gary's suggestion to help off set some of Nigel's web site costs some additional thought and I am proposing the following.

Since I have received so much from our community already, I wouldn't think of "selling" the badges, but reimbursement for postage and a little bit to offset the material costs wouldn't be refused. Here is what I would like to do:

$5.00 for "postage" to cover costs and an additional donation of your choosing to the "Peerless and Warwick Web fund". All funds received in excess of $5.00 will be sent to Nigel for the greater Peerless and Warwick good. I'll keep a public tally (without names) of the funds we raise and wire the money to Nigel with the express provisions that he can't immediately seed his beer jar. Don't fret over the donation part. It can be as little or as much as you like. If I receive your address and $5.00 a tag goes in the mail.

It is best that you PM me with your full postal address and paypal your funds to HealeyBN7 at yahoo com.

I received a few PMs already today, so I'll get those ready for mailing.

Thanks for your encouragement.

Dean

PS. Jeff and Eric, since I said earlier I would mail your badges for free, I won't wait for payment before sending your tags, but please do PM me with your full address if you haven't already. Enjoy!

It has been a bit challenging responding to emails as I am on the road this week. I will say that I am overwhelmed with the response and generosity. Must be the holiday spirit or just the spirits. So far with six confirmed orders we raised $130. $100 for Nigel and his web doings.

Once I get home this weekend, I will put tags in the mail for Jaylee, Frieman, Erik, Maserich, Gary S and MikeF. Thank you.

Donna (my wife) helped with the envelopes and stocked up on stamps - hope you are pleased.

Greg - I sent you my paypal info off line.

I still have a few left...

Dean

PS: Just so you know, it was easier making the tags then decoding our online user identities, real names, paypal account info, addresses and payment aliases.... So, if you think you sent me money or expressed interest and are not on the list to get a tag, please don't be shy and let me know. I probably screwed up.
