Archive for the club

for those of you that are members of the TR Register you may have seen my report in the last TRaction mag and read that we have started up out own archive.

I think we all have some magazines/articles/brochures etc relating to our cars. when I started these came in the form of photocopies (usually done on the company copier during lunchtimes!) but now we have the web images/ebay and all things are available.

whilst at the TR International this year Duncan Trigg brought along his sizeable collection of mainly Warwick memorabilia. he said to me that he had decided to sell it (as he had sold his Warwick 3 years ago) to make some space at home.

I asked him what he felt it was worth, he came back to me at the end of the day and said £250. I paid him there and then as it is 99% complete including negatives of press shots, adverts, articles, race meetings etc.

so here's the rub. I don't (nor has any registrar) charge membership to the club. I pay for the domain names/email/postage/website etc personally (and as for time spent.......) however, I would like to build on this archive as a resource for all. this cannot be funded by myself.

I had a chat at the International with the great unwashed present and the general opinion was that we hold the archive ourselves and that it is funded by donations.

so, back to the rub! I'm looking for contributions towards this initial outlay of £250. so far I have had £60 given to me by UK members.

we also discussed the idea that IF we managed to receive more than the £250 then this could go into "the archive pot" to cover further purchases. and a network of those most active collectors could keep an eye out for items we don't have and flag up items on ebay etc.

this will be needed as we don't want to bid against each other for the greater good!

we also talked about digitising this collection so it will be accessible to all. this could take the form of a disc which could be purchased to help with the archive pot? Jon Nolan has very kindly taken this on-board and is scanning like a goodun!

let me know your thoughts on this as I would like to get this right from the start!

It's important that you don't end up out of pocket here.  I'm really interested in a CD of good quality scans
of original documents, most of what I have is Photocopies.  By all means put some on the web as tasters,
but make sure that you sell the CD's!  Apparently Profit is no longer a dirty word.

Could we perhaps have a P&W Paypal account that could be used for collection?

It also might be useful to arrange a sticker to be attached to the new screens (when they get produced)
shamelessly asking for a "contribution" to the P&W archive (and probably the TR spares fund as well).

All the best to Di and the extended tribe.

Don't mind helping out financially either. I used to be a paid up member of the TR Register but went off it after turning up to a local event and eventually left after feeling like I'd dropped one in a lift when they found out I didn't actually own a TR but had a Peerless instead. Kind of put me off clubs all together.

Anyway, I you can provide details of how to contribute, I'd happily do so.

Mike

Nigel,

Thank you for leaning forward and securing the collection.  History is an important part of the ownership experience.

I like Frank's idea the best.  To raise the money consider pre-selling the CDs.  Be conservative, that is estimate your costs high and the your customer base low, so you are not out of pocket.

I think folks would be more then happy to pay for high quality scans/images.

Let me know how the math works out - you can count me in.

Hello old friends!

As Nigel rightly says, I am going through the huge task of digitising all of the archive and I will be producing a cd/dvd/memory cube/mind meld or whatever technology throws at us next, eventually! Typically my hard drive went kaput last week and progress has ground to a halt but I hope to be up and running again soon. I will be scanning in high resolution so it may yet end up being on DVD.

Wish me luck no

Hi Nigel, what is the best way to make a contribution? and do you have a date for release of the CD?

Regards, Jeff. (GT2/00063)

Hi, I'm trying my best! I've got around 2.5GB done so far in TIF format as this seems to give the best quality A4 ish scans.

It's definitely going to be a DVD or several DVDs at this rate! I may have to consider a low definition CD with jpgs and a full monty HD DVD box set with bonus features... biggrin

A comment in this month's copy of TR Action suggests that early copies of this archive might be around soon....

Is an announcement imminent?

I do indeed have preliminary archives on DVD (data disc) available. They probably represent two thirds to three quarters of the active material I have. I started using TIFF format but it was too large and I switched to PDF files instead and they look just as good. I will have to charge a small amount for each if only to cover discs and the crazy printer ink prices (the discs are nicely printed!) as below...

I think £3 is a sensible price. I think you can pay me by PayPal I'll have to look in to it. So just email me your address (jon(dot)nolan(at)rocketmail(dot)com) if you want one and I'll post one off to you. I'll need to add postage as well obviously.

For the real enthusiasts out there, the discs currently also have quite a few bits of archive Film of the Peerless Factory, the 1958 Le Mans (Jaguar and Porsche versions) etc and as the archive grows I won't have room for these on the disk as well as all the scanning so it is worth getting this early version!
