Diff info

am an old guy who used to race TR4s and rebuild them, now have bought a Peerless and have rebuilt the engine and are working on rear axle shafts and Diff.  I see all 4 U joints need replacing and also the pinion to CR has lots of play. I can rebuild the Diff myself if I know if the TR4 parts will fit. I nasty job but sombody has to do it. Also, do the IRS halfshafts exchange with the old Peerless shafts,  or do I rebuild the old shafts? This car seems to have some Competition history, thanking you in advance. First time posting.

dont think any of the TR4 parts will fit...unless you have a Peerless with a TR4 IRS set up? which would be interesting (bit concerned where you would fit the rear arms)

can yo post/send a pic to confirm? does it look like this?

Nigel, my car looks like your pic but I have tube shocks which lower end goes to a special hand made bracket that wraps around the leaf spring.

I guess I can dismantle the diff, read the bearing and seal #s, buy some shim pacs and prussian blue and read the tooth pattern and Bobs your uncle. as long a pinion and CR are OK

somewhere we have seal/bearing numbers...if I can't find them then one of the great unwashed (read: very helpful members) on here will jump to my aid.no

The diff seal numbers are in the "Wots It Off" thread in this subforum. It's sticky so should always appear at the top.

If you use the search button and enter "diff", you'll find lots of previous threads covering many points

ty Nigel for the pic, looks like some I have done, many early cars had shims to position the pinion shaft fore and aft with sleeve and to provide preload, also shims to position CR left and right for preload. nasty job and very time consuming without the proper Churchill tools. later diffs had threaded bearing holders which allowed you to move CR left to right by just turning the bearing holders, better but still lots of work. Later diffs had a crushable sleeve which did away with shims on the pinion gear but you still had know your position and gear teeth reading, lacking a new crushable sleeve for every installation I was able to reuse older ones by adding a few shims to crush it more. Seems to have worked as I had no come backs over the yrs,
