It's been a few weeks since I was able to do anything with car, and nothing since the few brief shake-down runs.
The heavy leak from the gearbox appears to be from failing gaskets on the overdrive-gearbox connection. If looks like there's been some attempt to seal it up with some sort of goop/epoxy/chewing gum, and it doesn't look pretty. Now I'm in there, I'll pull the o/d back and change the gaskets after cleaning everything up.
New axles, bearings and rotors up front will be next, having got everything from Moss and a couple of London trips but the transmission leak has to be first.
Pretty soon I'll be heading further afield, perhaps a visit to see progress on #213, Dean
That is great news. I'll have a beer waiting when you come by, but you won't find the body to #213. It is headed to Dave Wellwood this weekend for a much needed refurbishment.
I am still working through the details on the chassis restoration, so it will be around until the Channel lslands show, when I'll pass it to Dave for matting and final body/paint work.
More on the chassis 198 Peerless I bought in Canada, wish I knew the full history of the car as it appears to be preped for some sort of competition, SAH head prep, many added switches, headers, oversize radiator, oil cooler, etc. If anyone knows about this car I would be pleased to to hear it. Now have engine apart for rebuild. I raced TR 4s in SCCA and if I did well, Triumph would send me a check and ty. Frank Opalka, email, xkssfrank1@comcast.net 773-719-5053
Nigel: Sorry to not reply sooner, I bought #198 on Ebay from Canada near Quebec, body looks very nice, interior needs redye, worst of all engine had terrible blowby, smoke every where when you got on the power. I used to race TR4 so pulled the engine and rebuilt everything, fine fine now, added a high lift cam and bigger liners. Cars seems tohave been in Rally Competition as it had added interior lites, Rally clock, other switches that I have not found out yet. As I sais in my early post, it was tuned by SAH who I understand was the factory tuner. It has wider wheels, rack and pinion steering, shorted cross bar to give negative camber, tube shocks in rear and VERY stiff rear springs, (would like to know how to soften that up as my racing days are over) Hope this helps
