Petrol Prices

With the price of Shell Optimax (aka liquid gold) going off the scale at the moment it has become valuable enough for some lowlife to chance his luck siphoning my tanks, with the car on the drive, right outside the front door, if you please.

Notwithstanding the amount that the Peerless uses, at £5 a gallon this isn't remotely funny, but there doesn't seem to be any way of preventing it if you've got the original pattern filler caps.

Before I savage the boot floor and fit a boot tank, with an internal filler, has anyone else found a way to stop this, and retain the original side tanks?

YES.....sit up all night and shoot the Bastard!

I have thought about this as the cost is rising and there fore the interest in theft of this commodity will only rise. I know two garages in my area that have put a block on their pumps delivering any more than 50 to 60 liters of fuel due to "drive a ways". Again this hits the majority because of the minority. All fuel outlets have CCTV but obviously our Taxes don’t cover basic policing. I have to fill, stop, pay and re-fill a lorry/van for business because they hold 70 to 150 liters; even my estate holds 68 liters...

On the matter of P&W fillers I wonder weather "we" (as I would trust an item produced by a blind, three fingered enthusiast rather than MOSS) can come up with a fitting that goes inside the neck of the original cap that has to be removed to obtain access. The reduction in diameter caused by the fixed part may well help with the confusion with diesel pumps as well.

I still think you should shoot the bastards though.

Anyway frank your roughly in the right area couldn’t you call Tony Martin to come round for a late supper/breakfast

The other option is to make them drink it.  All of it, not just a quick suck.  And Tony Martin has many friends in this area, ooh-arrr.

I was looking at the construction of the cap, and it ought to be possible to fabricate something that fits in the filler tube between the threaded part of the cap, and the ali casting behind the wing.  In a TR3 these two bits probably touch, but I've got about a 6mm gap, this equates to the thickness of the GRP.  There's even a little lip on the casting to hold a gasket or something in place.

The problem with this is that anything you put in there will have to be robust enough to withstand terrorist attack, yet still flow petrol, so a bit of gauze won't do it.

The HGV guys use a sort of perforated hardened steel tube thing that's pop-rivetted to the tank flange, and fits down into the filler tube, but these seem to only come in 80mm diameter, and of course, we boys don't have a flange, do we?

If you put anything deeper in the tube, you'd never clear it out if it gets bunged up.

For the moment I'm sticking to three gallons max, and parking it on a down-slope, so at least there's a tank baffle in the way.

I had a wee look and they have a few filler caps that are lockable. Might not be the correct type for the Peerless, but they had lockable alloy and crome caps for both TR4 and some Aston Martin that look good. They're not cheap, but neither is petrol at the moment. Besides it's going to be something that you only buy once. Whereas petrol for the neighborhood thieves may be a reoccuring thing. Good luck !

yea if you made a mesh cone that fixed inside the neck of the existin filler then this would stop a tube bein passed all the way down.....hold on... theres an Idea.....catch the bastards and pass a tube all the way down....and i mean all the way down...in fact if you can catch um and get the tube all the way down frank, I will personelly drive all the way over to you and fill it back up with fuel ....AND the Peerless
