Yes, Auto Windscreens is in administration as of yesterday with 1100 people facing redundancy. My best wishes are with them.
It doesn't mean the end of our initiative necessarily. The maufacturing plant and expertise there is world class so hopefully it will re-emerge with new investors.
I'll be issuing a statement on the CM website once the situation has been clarified. In the meantime I hope we can still look forward to new glass in spite of this setback.
Here here Gary, our thoughts should be with those who face a very uncertain future, some of us have been there and its not a nice place to be.
I hope the northern plant gets up and running again as their collective expertise is second to none and to think all that knowledge could drift away is criminal.
As mentioned in the original thread (and in your excellent article Gary) and in my TR Register Report we were only at the getting names together stage to get a batch ordered to obtain discounts etc.
No monies have changed hands yet so were saved that problem so far.
It is indeed very good to hear about the positive progress. I can't wait for October!
I have been looking at local (US) options for a replacement front screen. Of course it is bleak. The best I have been able to do so far is locate a vendor (Tri Valley Auto Glass) http://www.trivalleyautoglass.com/custom_cut_glass.cfm that would be willing to cut a Peerless windscreen from an existing, larger, windshield that shares the same curve.
We haven't located the right piece of doner glass yet, but I have some confidence a suitable doner it could be found eventually.
The problem is that this not an inexpensive process. You then have to buy the doner glass and the services to water jet and finish. An initial estimate puts the first screen at over one thousand dollars with little room to bring down the price with additional orders.
I have my finger's crossed that I won't have to pursue this any further:)
