Warwick (Peerless is the same I think) Rear Wheel Bearings

Hi All Clever people in Peerless Warwick Land
Last MOT I had advisory in rear wheel bearing play on my Warwick. Now its that time again for my MOT. So I need to do something. From the "whats it off page" on this site it gives you the bearing type.I think they are the same for both cars? If they are they are

Timken 2523S & 2585.(Race & Cup) These two parts assemble to make one bearing, 4 complete bearings are needed per car.

Great. Off I go and try to order some. bit of  a shock then. I have spoken to a recommended bearing supplier. He tells me list price ( He said he could do some discount) the bearings are £250.48 Plus VAT. I fall on floor as I had looked up normal TR3 bearing prices. The bearing people say also Listed is  the same bearing without the S in the decription. These are £73.60 plus VAT. The dimmensions are exact the only differance is the weight. The S is 10g lighter. Timken will not tell him the differance as the worry people phone get advise and buy cheaper ones.
Has anyone got any knowlege if I must have S or not.Or what is the differance of S or not S. Even if I have cheaper non timken would they last would be my worry to.
I await the knowlege from the learned world
Thanks
Duncan

Hi Duncan...
before you go order new ones, check the old ones.
they are hefty taper rollers and may just need adjusting.....
take 'em apart and wash them....
if the tracks are smooth and unbroken they'll go again.... they have to be shimmed and tightened on the fine taper to give a small preload....
ie: no slack to a small amount of resistance.
how much slack do they have? they'll stand a mm or so at the wheel rim..

no good comparing TR3 bearings, they're gonna be plain old fixed ball race prob.

can't imagine changing these.... just adjust them.....

Hi all
Bearing work completed I hope. Kept existing bearing, turned shim over as wear face will be in different place. I did this as I found it hard to find shims. I did find  that Mercedes-Benz truck king pin shims could be an answer. ( I work at truck dealership) only problem is finding which truck is the best size. Sizes are not listed so I need to brib parts to order a few for differant trucks and then go from there. I will let you know if I find ones that maybe usefull to us.
I will be doing more overhaul work in 2011 as its 50 years of Warwick this year so  just need to obtain MOT for this year for Malvern etc, then time for overhaul ready for the next 50 years.

Thanks for help and advise

Well done Duncan.

How many Warwicks are we expecting at the International this year, what is the record number at a gathering?

I can think of the following people with a Warwick;

Jon
Duncan
Joe
Celia & Ian
Jonathan
Alan

Who have I missed and who is coming to the International?

Well I have No 15, AKA Primrose, and I'm still working on it (I am ,really!) but I won't it get there this year.  I've been a bit preoccupied with other things.  Target is Malvern next year, when the car will be 50.

Hi Frank

I think most Warwicks are 1961, mine is no. 16 and is a Mar 61 registered car.  I hope to make it to both events, my car is also off the road (again) at the mo having some bodywork done but should be ready in time for this years IWE.

Good luck with the rebuild, any pictures?

Joe
