RE: The Bar is Open !

Had a guy get in touch about a few bits he has for a Peerless.
1no dash board pod with clocks/switches/lights except the amp gauge.
1no hand brake leaver.

Open to negotiation on cost if going towards a rebuild

just came back from a very wet prescot meeting, good fun but damp to say the least!furious
Came back on my favorite B roads and 4 miles from home she died, now this happened last month as well coming back from bristol.
Problem solved both times...coil. now the the one that expired today was a spare that i have carried for two years and was used but it has lasted a month, the new one fitted on the side of the road today is my mates next door, a proven spare, done 1000 miles tops.....how long before that dies?
What is goin on? this is the fifth..yes 5 one I have fitted to this car in 8 years.
all Ideas from the great unwashed gladlly recievedweirdface

This is easy Nigel.

The way that coil windings are specified has changed over the years
and because modern insulation varnish is much better than shellac
it's normal practice to specify the wires a bit smaller.  It may get
hotter, but the insulation won't break down.  It's also claimed that
modern copper has less impurities, and performs better as well.
So a modern coil has thinner wires than an original item.

This sidesteps issues like thermal mass and ultimate current capacity
but it does mean that coils are cheaper to make.  However in an
unfriendly environment, like under the bonnet, or bolted to a TR
block, a bit of safety margin is a very useful thing to have.

I'm assuming that all the coils in your collection are 12 volt
non-ballasted items.  Using a lower-voltage coil designed for a ballast
resistor will mean that it eats points and capacitors and burns out pretty
quickly.

So what you need is a 12 Volt non-ballasted original specification
(gold) Lucas Sports coil.  These aren't cheap, but I've used one (bolted to
the block, too) for 4 years without a problem so far....

While you are at it, try to get a proper capacitor (with MADE IN ENGLAND
stamped on the end), and watch out for dodgy rotor arms.  Both of
these have caught me out recently.

Or you could give up the fight and fit an electronic ignition.

Frank

Thanks frank, i have fitted a gold one this time. i moved the coil some time ago from the block to the chassis as i thought this may reduce shake/heat etc.
i have also been running electronics in the dissie for about 4 years now. This seems very good and have had no probs sofar.

What type of electronic ignition have you fitted?  Would you recommend it?

Cheers

yea i would recomend it, it's a luminition unit i think. will have a look at the w/end and report. it replaces the points inside the cap so no box out side to give it away. very discrete, and I hat points and all that crap...too many years fitting, cleaning, and general buggerin about with points.
Although i do still carry a complete set of dissie parts in the boot incase of failer!!biggrin

Might look good on TR6 5.5J steels?

Wheel Trims

Yeah, I saw those as well.

They don't look a bit like the Peerless ones that I've seen (See picture, Phase 1 show car in the gallery). My car came with some like the advertised ones, but mine were deeper dished, believed to be Vangaurd trims, skipped them because they were too far gone.

They don't look like Warwick ones either. Perhaps we should ask why he thinks they belong to a Peerless...

Anyway, original steel wheels are the very devil to balance, and wires are cool.

Cor, is that you Nigel?

I didn't expect to find anyone down here exploring the dusty corners of the website.  It's like king Tut's tomb, loads of old junk, but no sign of any gold.

May not be able to make it to the show this year, but good luck anyway.

i was talking to a guy a couple of days ago about the difference in performance between the Peerless & the TR3.

I seem to remember reading a road report from the period and they did a standing start with both cars. the Peerless got away a little quicker due to the De Dion

and then they kind of leveled out up to about 50mph. after that the Peerless pulled away by use of its sleek styling.

can anyone else remember this report and if so can you refresh my poor memory as to what/where/when etcsmile

Well Nigel, we're either dreaming the same dream (spooky) or that report exists somewhere because I distinctly remember reading it too. The only problem is that I can't remember where I saw it either.

The March 1959 R&T states that "The Peerless is nearly as good as the 1956 TR3 to 70 MPH, slightly better over the standing 1/4 mile and definitly faster to 90.  They claim a 7% reduction in drag over the TR3 raising the top speed to a tested 107 but they thought 110 was obtainable.

Will have a look at the articles I've amassed, as I recall the same comparison.

I can vouch for Frank Wright's old phase 2 being good for 110mph on a French motorway in 2006. I wasn't even trying so it had more to give.

Certainly surprised a few people and put an even bigger grin on my face.

All the best,

Gary
