I recently bought some repro tripod headlamps for our Peerless, only to find that the tripods have come apart after only about a month's use. I will be returning them but wondered if anyone else had experience of original type or repro tripods. What I'm after are lamps that will take H4 bulbs and preferably also have a sidelight facility.
Yea what you’ve paid good money for are repro crap..So did I.
I have sold those lamps on as I had no receipt. They were P700 lamps fitted with H4 sockets just right ah..No what they are really are Mini reflectors glued to the rear of a copied glass. If they were like mine your dip was on the local road signs and your beam was on the opposite side of the road.
This is in my opinion because the focal length was incorrect because the reflector and glass were never designed to go together.
I have bought a set of old PL tripod lamps and I'm running on old type bulbs...and there heaps better than the repro's.
You can get H4 bulbs with the old type fitting that will go in and give you the correct focal length. A gentleman makes these as I’ve got a box somewhere and will find his address out.
aaaah you thought I’d forget didn't you, you thought he will never come up with that address he never does, well......I have only because I washed my hands in the workshop and actually knocked the for mentioned box of the shelf
This site I am sure is not the guy my dad talked to/bought from but it's the same product.
I think I might try the LED rear lamps as well as if you have ever followed a P/W on the road at night in the rain/fog well you did well...I lost mine...and I was drivin
I will give this a try once I've got my money back from Europa. BTW, where did you get your headlamps from? I am now a bit wary of the usual suppliers having had this kind of experience with a few of them...
Hey, I've got some Lucas PL (UEC) tripods that are reproduction (but they came in the pukka Lucas box). I bought them at the NEC show in Xmas 2000 and they were £70 each.
Holdens stock the UEC Halogen bulbs. The dip is absolutely top class, the main seems to be less sharp by modern standards, but it is pretty much the same with the standard incadescent 40/45 Watt worms, except you can't see over the road with them. However, no sidelights, so I'm running with proper fairy lights and white indicators.
I suspect that this is a close as you'll get to "original" unless you can find NOS stuff that still has some silvering left.
