Handbrake cables

Hi All,

Does anyone have:

a.   A spare pair of new handbrake cables they are willing to part with?

b.   A spare cable (complete - condition less important) that could be used as a pattern to make some more new ones?

I have been in touch with Speedy Cables who can make new cables, but they will need a sample to copy.  I can't take one off our car unfortunately as it's needed daily.

If anyone can help, please let me know - also anyone who needs cables, since Speedy can lower the price if we buy 10 or more sets.  (I won't know what they will charge until they have one to copy).  Contact via the Forum or on:  huskiesandnewts@tiscali.co.uk

Thanks in advance!

Nick (Ph2 00250's mechanic)

Yes, Speedy's do a superb job.

But be careful, they copy EXACTLY.  So, as per original, you'll need 2 of 1/4 whitworth spanners to adjust the cables.  Every year at MOT time I say a couple of rude words.

Had a chat with Alan, he would be interested in a set if that will help numbers.

I would also think if you still need a cable to copy then he could post it to them?

Come on Gary you will need a set?

Count me in although I haven't got that far yet. Is this Peer(less) pressure?

Suppose I can use 'em as dental floss if I already have them.
Perhaps Speedy would like to show my readers how they are made in return for coverage and a good price for the Register? I throw the gauntlet Sir C.

I'll speak to them if they're interested...
Let me know.

Hi Nick, eventually i will also need a pair, so count me in.

Is there already an estimate price for the cables?

Can't help you regarding a pattern, i didn't get any handbrake cables with the car.

Any idea when you will get a price on these cables as we will need them sometime as well in the future when the garage goes up and work starts again.

Please let us know thanks

good to hear from you Tony, get that garage going not much time left to 2008!

We seem to be gathering momentum on this one, have you got any costs Nick?

Thanks for interest everyone!

I will need a pattern cable to get a price from Speedy, so if anyone has got one loafing, that would be fantastic.  (a used one would be OK if complete/not damaged).  As I said at first, our car is in daily use so we can't spare one!

Yours in hope...

Still hoping someone can supply a cable for Speedy to use as a pattern.

Nige - did you say Alan might have one?  If so, could you ask him?

Thanks again,

Nick

Come on all you Peerless people, someone must have a handbrake cable not fitted to a car, or a car that's not going anywhere for a while.  We are getting a bit desperate now, since our frayed cable has snapped, meaning that the remaining cable is doing the work, and the handbrake isn't working properly with only one drum connected.  The car is used every day, so we don't have the option to take it off the road and we will be stuck if the other cable snaps!

You will of course get your cable back as soon as possible, and we will pay postage.  From the notes above, you will be helping several Peerlesses besides ours!

Hi Nigel,

Hill starts are a bit of a challenge - it's a good thing the pedals are close together.  Al can't wait to have her handbrake back!

I've sent the cable to Speedy so we should have a price soon.  They are quoting for multiples of one set and for 10 sets which should be a bit cheaper.  Once I have the prices I will post them here and ask people to commit so we can get an order in.  If we get fairly close, I am inclined to go for 10 as the price will be a bit better and then there will be spares in case anyone has an emergency - like us!

Best,  Nick

Hi all,

I have spoken to Nick about these cables and he has a price.

I have also spoken to the TR register about using their new spares fund to support us if we buy 10 or more sets.

Costs at the moment are around £68.00 +VAT for a 1 off for Nick to sort out his immediate problem.

If we have 10 set they come down to around £56.00 + VAT each.

So first things first...who wants a set?

Leave your interest on this thread and I'll do a head count.

Second try spacing went haywire last time - Nigel please remove the first if you can?

Hi All,
The cables have finally arrived.  Based on the interest expressed here, I got Speedy to make 10 sets, and have fitted the first set to Ali's car.  They seem to be very well made, as you would expect, and they certainly work.  Just as well, as the car's MoT was due (it passed with flying colours).
I can now post cables on to any of you who need them, at cost (those who have already expressed interest, please confirm).
Cost breakdown:
The cost of the cables, including VAT and shipping, was £636.27.  This equates to £63.63 per pair + £1.00 for a padded bag + the cost tp post them on to you:
UK:  £2.12, or £2.80 if you want recorded delivery.
Netherlands/Germany:  £5.69 (not tracked) or £9.89 (tracked/signed for)
I've spent my own money on these cables, so I would very much appreciate early confirmation of interest (and cheques!).  I am charging people exactly what it's cost me, but if many of the cables hang around, I may add a little interest on to cover my 'investment' - so please don't hang on too long!
For Erik and Wolfgang:  if you guys can't pay in £UK, you could instead use PayPal - which will do the conversion automatically - if you have an account.  Please let me know what you want to do.
Best,  Nick

Hi Nick,

Yesterday i received the handbrake cables.
Very nice indeed!!
Especially the grease nipples, i don't know if they where standard on the original cables, but this will make servicing the cables very easy.

I'm glad i have them know, although it won't fit them shortly as i'm still working on the body of my car.

Many thanks and greetings,

Erik

I'm pretty sure PH1 and PH2 cables are the same; I borrowed a cable when I had the last batch made which may have come from either.

They fitted our PH2 perfectly, and I'm sure went onto some PH1s as well - calling Mike RF - are yours fitted?

I think they may be different for Warwicks?

Hello Nick.

Short answer is yes, they fitted.

As always, there is a but.

Connecting to the handbrake proved a bit difficult but I managed to fabricate a solution easily enough.

They certainly appear to work perfectly but, needless to say, they haven't been tested to MOT standards yet.
