One of the numerous small things my car was missing on purchase were the handbrake cables. Fortunately, the handbrake itself was still there. Equally fortunately, I managed to get a set of cables (the last set, I believe) from Nick Copeland. Thanks again, Nick.
Unfortunately, I have no idea how the two ends of the cables attach to the handbrake. I assume some sort of yoke device is employed to link the two cables to the single pivot point on the handbrake but have no idea if this was unique to the Peerless or was derived from Triumph sourced parts.
Can I ask how others have achieved this linkage and, if possible, provide pictures/drawings/part numbers.
ATM, my ongoing restoration is held up due to the unavailability of the bearing cages for the steering box. I've tried all the usual TR suppliers but no luck. Apparently new stock is due in at the end of the year. If anyone has a spare, I'd happily pay a reasonable price for it.
Thanks. Frank. I tried all the suppliers including those who do 2nd hand parts TRGB. TR Bitz etc, etc and no luck. Some have old steering boxes but are unwilling to split them.
Re the handbrake, so presumably 2 clevises (part no. 101247) along with the associated clevis pins? If so, that's yet another part NLA. My luck just keeps on getting better and better.
from memory its just a piece of tube with a central hole for the leaver link and two adjacent holes for the two cables...it kinda settles out somewhere near even
Thanks, Nigel. That's a workable solution although I suspect it's not original. The two cables that Nick sold me came with threaded clevises (clevi?) on the handbrake ends. Each clevis had one wider plain hole and one narrower threaded hole which I suspect are intended to take the Triumph clevis pins. I believe Nick had these made up to match an original set so I assume the clevises are part of the original set up?
However.....
I'm not that worried about originality so may copy/make up something similar to yours.
Also, A good friend of mine has developed a handbrake lever for the rear drums that gives you an added mechanical advantage. I have a larger pair (forgive the bragging) and will attempt to fit when I have the current nightmare in the workshop out of the way....
Oooooah, I'm so gona do a load of stuff when I get this job outa here
The Stag owners club also did some ali fittings that extend the handbrake arms.
Careful, they are expensive! I did fit some in an attempt to get the Warwick working, but there is a trade-off between leverage and travel, so although you can lock the back wheels solid, you can't then move the car!
My understanding is that the root of the problem is that the repro backplates are a Ford item, and the pivot point is in (just) the wrong place. So making the arms longer may not achieve what you want. And welding the shoes to move the pivot is tricky because the heat will compromise the shoo gloo.
