Hi Torque Starters

Does anyone have experience of fitting a Hi-torque starter to a Peerless?   I'd like to put one in but given it's a bit tighter in a Peerless than a TR3, I thought I'd ask before dropping the money.

I've put one in the Warwick, and it's not a problem.
The unit is much smaller than a TR starter both in length and diameter.

And it weighs a lot less, and costs more.

whilst rebuilding my engine I came across a NOS TR4 starter, in its box (for £50!) so that kind of sent me down that route (91 toothed flywheel ring not 90) and its been great for 15+ years.

fires after about 1/2 a stroke usually. from cold its about two revolutions so no real drain on power

Thanks, gents. I'm going to get one as the current motor struggles on a cold start even with a fully charged new battery.

Probably a silly question but is the solenoid in good condition? You can get quite a volt drop across burnt/pitted contacts and the beefier the cables the better too.

Sorry if that was an exercise in how to suck an egg.

We got one from TR Enterprises when we rebuilt the car several years ago and haven't looked back. Has proved to be efficient and reliable from instillation.

Well, it took me a long time to getting around to fitting the new starter, but it's excellent. I took the time to rebuild some of the hacked-up wiring from when the car was fitted with the kill-switch etc, and have left the old solenoid in place just in case.... As a result it's not clear how much improvement is from the starter and how much is from by-passing the old wiring as per Jon's post. Either way the start-up from cold is like night vs day.

Highly recommended.
