Boot/trunk lid

The boot lid on #118 has become loose where the hinge arm meets the lid itself, as in the picture.    I've tried tightening in the screws, but without success.   It moves enough to give me concern that the lid might pop open going over a small bump.

Does anyone know what lurks within the fiberglass?  I was thinking of using a dremel tool to make a small hole and replace what's there with a nut and bolt.

Anyone know?

You'll find a thin steel plate (or what's left of it) laminated within the GRP. It's a long thin rectangular plate linking both hinges and will, judging by your picture, have rusted away to the point where tightening the screws will have no effect.

Best answer is probably to remove the inner moulding (carefully) from the outer skin and replace with alloy plate.

So inspired by a comment by Gary in the last Classics Monthly, I put a couple of rivnuts in the trunk lid and so far they work perfectly. I fitted 1/4-20 inserts and two machine screws, and it looks very neat.

Thanks, Gary!

Don't blame me, Dave!

Rivnuts are a good way to go. I hope they work.

Dave, check these out.

I've bought from ECF previously. I'm sure you can find the fasteners closer to home though.
