Half Shafts - Hardi Spicer

It was time to replace the sliding clunking half shafts in the Warwick, so looking through one of the original documents that came with the car, the technical spec states that Warwick used Hardi-Spicer components.

In the US, I was able to order the parts from Drivetrain America for next day shipping.  Not cheap, but surprised that they were readily available 50 years later.

(2) 2-82-58x splined yoke shaft

(2) 2-3-128kx yoke sleeve

(4) 2-2-329 flange

(4) 5-785x crosses to a 5-1310x  u-joint

Hope this helps.  FYI - I used the same suite of hardware for my Peerless.

Dean

PS: Don't worry, I didn't scribble on the original document.  The pinion seal note is scribbled on a working copy.

You could have ordered them complete from Euro Driveshafts in Scotland.

They manufacture the same unit for fork trucks (strange but true)

I had a prop shaft made by them for another car a few years ago and took one of my old Peerless ones in with the idea of getting a quote for them. Imagine my surprise when the guy went into the stores and pulled out 2 brand new ones. IIRC, they were about £45.00 each.

Sorry, Dean. It WAS a good few years ago now. They're probably £100.00 each by now. I think I'm correct in saying they were on the old wotsitof list and I believe someone (Jon, perhaps) got a set for evaluation and discovered they far exceeded the original Peerless spec.

God, that's even longer ago than I thought Nigel.

No wonder I couldn't remember who did what. I've no idea what I was doing myself back then.

So, it is still bugging me that you guys are able to buy real Hardy Spicer half shafts for so little dough.

Just so I understand, you are talking about all the parts in this pile for something between £45 and £100 per side.

Even though I have no intention of returning the parts I bought, I just had to place a call to Euro Driveshafts in Scottland for a current quote.

While they didn't know the cost off hand, they took my details and are going to send me a written estimate.  When I get that, I'll share the details.

I probably shouldn't admit it, but I am kind of hoping for a much larger number:)

Well, Dean. The £45.00 I mentioned is well out of date now so I would expect them to be at least in 3 figures. However, I suspect you may still get a shock.

Problem is you're replacing all the knuckle/UJ type joints but if there warn then the splines definitely are too. So you will still get a clonking/backlash in the drivetrain.

My opinion would be to send that lot back and order two new complete shafts and Ill bring them over as cuff links.........

Brian did say he had a spare pair? NOS??

Indeed the splines are shot and that is where the majority of the clunking is coming from. The parts above include the inner and outer splined yoke in addition to both bolt flanges and the u-joints.

Now that they have a robust coat of black urethane paint, I don't think they are going anywhere but into the back of the Warwick :) .

Brian did have a pair of NOS, but I fear that I bought them from him last year and they're been providing solid service in my #118 since then.... The splines in my originals were shot
