I need to fabricate a heatshield to go between the carbs and manifold, Nigel has got a very nice one (heatshield , that is) . I was wondering if anyone had a drawing or some details that would make this easier, I have nothing to copy. Also any advice on how it all goes together, washers, gaskets etc, would be most welcome.
Why thank you Jonathan, yes I built one out of thin gauge aluminum.
Start by taking off your carbs etc.
Use card board from a cereal packet to make a template. Place the card over the studs from the inlet manifold and press on; this will mark the card so you have all 8 stud marks. Then measure up say 60mm from the top 4 studs and strike a line. This is your datum to work from. You can shape it how you like but make sure the linkages /choke arm etc clear the shield and you can shut your bonnet.
I have also made a shield to go curve round the back of the alternator, this I then pop riveted onto the main shield with angle brackets. I formed an angle at the front edge that connected with the front exhaust stud to secure the front edge of the shields. This has since broken under stress so maybe thicker Ali or a better fit will help.
From memory I think I had problems with the accelerator linkage at the front, it was hitting the shield so in the end I bored a hole in it to allow it to move.
I think I put thermal gasket blocks on both sides of the shield...will check....sorry but knackered after 6 days working at the London natural history museum.
Give me a call if you have any problems or if you want to have a look I'll probably be at Bromley next weekend.
